Yantian ‘resumes full operations’

China’s key southern container port of Yantian is expected to return to full operations today following several weeks of partial closure – although it will take weeks or even months to clear backlogs of cargo, freight sources warn, especially as peak season approaches.

Increased demand and worsening port congestion in Asia is forcing the east-west alliance carriers to temporarily adjust their liner service networks.

Asia-North Europe ocean rates 'jump' further

Aside from another “jump” in Asia-North Europe ocean rates, which spiked 15% and US$500 past the US$10,000/FEU mark this week, prices stayed level on most major lanes, according to the latest international freight update published by digital rates specialist Freightos, which incorporates the Freightos Baltic Index (FBX).

Yantian Port halts entry for export containers

The Port of Yantian said it will stop taking in loaded containers as congestion at the export hub in Southern China deteriorates.

The restriction will be implemented from 2200 hrs local time on May 25 to 2359 hrs on May 27 and will only be partly lifted afterwards for export boxes with their vessels expected to arrive at the port within the next four days.

Over half of container bookings rolled at some ports

Container shipping service quality is continuing to worsen, with the number of boxes being rolled increasing.

Figures from freight visibility platform project44 shows the percentage of containers missing their scheduled sailings is rising, with some carriers and ports rolling more than half their cargo in April.
